Frequently Asked Questions

In general, private tutoring is tailored for what the parents’ objectives are, the student’s level, etc. Unlike the group lessons, tutoring can be remedial, or serve as preparation for a specific test, or as an accelerated course that follows a day-school curriculum (e.g. Algebra 2, Calculus).

Payments are due at the beginning of each month. You can pay by a check (mailed to Firecracker Math, PO Box 20621, Oakland, CA 94620) or via your Venmo account.

Let us know at least 24 hours in advance if the lesson needs to be canceled or rescheduled to a different day/time. One cancellation per month is allowed. If a lesson is canceled within the cancellation window, the payment is transferred to the following month. Otherwise, there is no refund for the missed lesson. Firecracker Math will refund all unused credit in its full amount if you decide to discontinue the lessons. Cancellations can be made directly with the teacher up to 1 week in advance.

We will match you with a tutor who will be able to meet in a location that is convenient for you (your home, a library, a neighborhood cafe, online, etc.). We’ll discuss all the available options with you.

Tutoring sessions may be of any length – we will discuss it with you and quote you the cost. Lessons can be anywhere between 45 and 90 minutes.

Our Program Director will talk to you to learn more about your goals, your child’s learning style and personality, topics you want to cover and more. They’ll then take that information and match you with the right instructor from our pool of available tutors. It’s rare that students are unhappy with their tutor, but we understand that sometimes the chemistry just isn’t there. If you aren’t comfortable with your tutor following the first session, let us know and we’ll find you a tutor who is a better fit.

Assessment test may be requested but is not mandatory.

You can contact us directly. We are 100% focused on the success of your child, so we encourage parents to reach out to us with any questions or concerns as we achieve that goal. Contact us via email at hello@FirecrackerMath.org or via our office phone line at (510) 488-4556,  or talk to the teacher directly.

Once a tutor has been selected, you will be provided with their contact
information.

From our initial consultation, we choose the most suitable tutor for you based on your schedule. That tutor will be assigned to you for the duration of your classes. In some circumstances, your tutor may no longer be available, in which case we will re-match you with another tutor.

The tutors we work with come from a variety of backgrounds, including former and current teachers, university and college professors, and professionals from a wide variety of disciplines and industries. They all have advanced math and science degrees, extensive experience teaching kids, and are passionate about math and sharing their knowledge with their students.
