Math Kangaroo
Math Kangaroo, a fun, introductory math competition in the United States and worldwide, is held on the third Thursday of March. Firecracker Math offers weekly workshops, which include preparation, coaching, and sampling real test problems. The class is for 1-7 grade students divided into different level groups. It is a 10-week-long class. Students who want to participate in the actual competition must register for the Math Kangaroo. Students can participate in the class but can opt out of taking the exam. - Introduction to Math Kangaroo: format, rules, features. Sampling typical problems and discussing problem solving approaches. Home assignment: Full test practice (75 min).
- Topic A – recognizing and evaluating patterns. Developing skills and techniques. Exercises.
- Topic B – Operations with numbers. Developing skills and techniques. Exercises.
- Topic C – Logic and multi-step reasoning. Developing skills and techniques. Exercises.
- Topic D – Geometry and spatial math. Developing skills and techniques. Exercises.
- Clever techniques and what do you do when you don’t know the answer? Elimination, estimation,and educated guessing exercises. Home assignment: Full test practice (75 min).
- Final tips and exercises based on the results of the full practice test.
American Math Competitions
The American Mathematics Competitions are the first of a series of competitions in secondary school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad.
AMC 8 Preparation Course:
This 10 week-long course is designed to prepare students for AMC 8 exam.
Students develop skills in problem solving, logical reasoning and creative approach to math challenges. They explore a variety of topics from number theory, algebra, geometry, combinatorics, probability and more. Students learn to apply various problem-solving strategies while working on AMC-style problems. Contact info@firecrackermath.org for Fall 2024 class information.
- The class is for 6-8th grade students.
- Dates: October 23 – January 17th
- It is a 10-week-long class that is offered in-person on Wednesdays (Piedmont) and Thursdays (Berkeley) and online on Fridays from 4:15pm to 5:30pm once a week.
- $390 for the course, $50dro p-in fee.
- For those students who will be taking the exam: Regular Registration Deadline – Dec. 23, 2024, Late Registration Deadline – Jan. 15, 2025. Test dates: January 22–28, 2025. https://maa.org/amcreg/
- Students CAN participate in class but opt out of the AMC exam.
SAT Math Subject Test (Levels I and II)
The SAT Mathematics Subject Test assesses the knowledge you’ve gained from three years of college-preparatory mathematics. Taking the tests can support your high school grades, indicate an interest in pursuing math-based programs of study, and help you differentiate yourself in the admission process. Level I covers two years of algebra and one year of geometry, while Level II adds trigonometry and elementary functions (precalculus). Visit the College Board website to learn more.
